AVI dates from the 1990s. Old camcorders, DivX and Xvid downloads and some Windows screen recorders still produce it. Modern phones, Macs and browsers often will not play it, and the files are large for what they contain.

This converter re-encodes the AVI into MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. The result is smaller, plays everywhere and can be shared to social apps or added to a slideshow.

Conversion runs in your browser with FFmpeg WebAssembly. Your file is never sent to a server, no account is needed, and nothing is added.

Interlaced camcorder footage

Old DV AVI files are often interlaced and show comb lines on motion. Converting keeps the frames as they are; deinterlace in an editor if the lines bother you.

Expect a much smaller file

DV AVI is roughly 13 GB per hour. H.264 MP4 at the same resolution is a small fraction of that.

Huge tapes

A full tape capture is far over the browser's memory limit. Cut it into shorter pieces with the video cutter first.

Frequently asked questions

Does AVI to MP4 reduce quality?

The video is re-encoded to H.264. On the High setting the result matches the source visually and is much smaller.

Will DivX and Xvid files work?

Yes. DivX, Xvid, MJPEG, DV and most other codecs FFmpeg can decode are converted.

Is there a file size limit?

Browsers handle roughly 1 GB in memory. Files under about 300 MB are comfortable.

Is it free?

Yes. No sign-up, no watermark, and the file stays on your device.
